Practical and emotional support for anyone affected by cancer

Our volunteer roles

We have a variety of different volunteering roles available at Coping with Cancer. Whether you can spare a few hours once or week or want to help at our events, there’s something for everyone.

Our main volunteer roles are outlined below. In addition, we are currently recruiting volunteers for Macmillan One Stop Support at Coping with Cancer, an innovative new project in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, and The Men's Shed, our allotment-based support group for men affected by cancer, launching this Spring.

Whilst we have opportunities for the roles below all year round, we often also recruit for specific volunteer roles, in specific areas or at specific times of the week. To find out what we're currently looking for, click here.

Our main volunteer roles

Befrienders

Coping with Cancer’s volunteer befrienders provide practical and emotional support to our clients in their own homes, visiting patients and their families. Volunteers provide a range of support, from helping with a trip to the shops or a hospital visit, to providing a ‘listening ear’ - someone to talk to. For many clients, visits from our befrienders can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation. You’ll visit the same client on a regular basis, once a week, fortnight or month, for an hour or two.

Telephone Support Volunteers

Telephone Support.jpgCoping with Cancer’s telephone support line offers a private and confidential support service to clients and carers. It isn’t a counselling or advice line, but provides a ‘listening ear’ so that clients can discuss any issues or problems. You’ll call clients on a regular basis, and can volunteer for a couple of hours once a week or fortnight.

Complementary Therapists

Reflexology.jpgIf you are a qualified therapist and can spare a few hours why not join our team? We aim to offer an extensive range of therapies to our clients, helping to relieve the emotional and physical symptoms that cancer can have on the body. Volunteers are able to provide treatments from our well equipped rooms at Helen Webb House in Leicester, at any of our drop-in therapy groups around the county, or in client’s own homes.

Counsellors

Many of our clients benefit from counselling. If you are a counsellor, or a counsellor in training, and can spare a few hours a week, we’d love to hear from you. We provide supervision to all counsellors, and you can volunteer to see clients at Helen Webb House either during the day or in the evening.

Local Fundraising Group Volunteers

We’re looking for people to organise local fundraising groups to meet regularly, organise and support fundraising initiatives in their local area. It’s a great way to meet new people, get involved and have fun.

Our fundraising team will provide support and expert advice so you have everything you need to carry out your fundraising activities and make them a success.
